City of Carlisle
The Jewel in Cumbria's Crown

Visitors often tell us that they had no idea how attractive Carlisle is.

Old Town Hall (Information Centre) - 12th century Cathedral

Carlisle Castle (12th century)

14th century Guildhall (museum)    -    17th century Tullie House (museum)

With a compact, pedestrianised city centre and many specialist family-run shops, a Norman castle and Cathedral, several excellent museums, a wide selection of hotels and guest-houses and lots of small cafés, the City of Carlisle is an excellent venue for a midweek or long weekend break.

Derwentwater and Keswick (30 miles) - Port Carlisle on the English Solway (12 miles) - Housesteads Roman Fort (28 miles)

Caerlaverock Castle near Dumfries (30 miles) - Brougham Castle in the Eden valley (23 miles)

As well an as attractive city in its own right, Carlisle is also a splendid touring centre within easy reach of the beautiful Lake District, the desolate Solway Coast (English and Scottish sides), the dramatic Hadrian's Wall, the turbulent Scottish Borders and the lovely Eden Valley.

So why does nobody know about it???

and, by-the-way, despite the signs on the M6
Carlisle is still in England!
